The framework

The six areas of digital health

Every nonprofit’s digital work — whatever the size or budget — comes down to six areas. It’s the plain-language checklist we measure everything against, and the same six our whole engagement ladder is built around. Here’s what each one means, and what “healthy” looks like.

01

Website & foundations

Your website is the front door — often the first (and only) impression a supporter gets. This area is about whether a stranger understands in five seconds who you help and what to do next, and whether the site loads fast and works on a phone.

What good looks like

A clear homepage, one obvious primary action (donate / volunteer / contact), mobile-fast, and actually measured — a good site nobody tracks is a missed opportunity.

02

Digital communications

The rhythm you reach supporters on. This is about having a consistent channel you own — email first — rather than sporadic posts on platforms that own the relationship for you. Every quiet month is a relationship quietly cooling.

What good looks like

A cadence you can actually keep (monthly is plenty), a list you control, and sends that are segmented so the right people hear the right message.

03

Data & measurement

Knowing what’s actually working. Without it, effort and budget go where they feel right instead of where they pay off. This area is about tracking the few numbers that matter so decisions stop being guesses.

What good looks like

One key metric watched weekly, clean and de-duplicated contact data in one place, and a simple dashboard your team and board actually look at.

04

Tech capacity & systems

The tools and know-how that keep things running. Fragile tech — held together by workarounds and one key person — is a real continuity risk: the day they leave, things break. This area is about stability that doesn’t depend on heroics.

What good looks like

Core processes documented so you’re not one-person-dependent, overlapping tools consolidated, and routine manual work automated away.

05

Fundraising & supporter experience

The path a supporter takes from interested to giving — and how it feels along the way. Every extra form field, slow page, or confusing step quietly loses a motivated donor. This area is about making it easy to say yes, and just as easy to come back.

What good looks like

A donate flow that’s short and works on a phone, one clear supporter journey mapped end to end, and donor data clean enough to thank people promptly and personally.

06

Strategy & alignment

The plan that points everything the same way. Without a clear digital plan, effort scatters and budget leaks — it’s usually the highest-leverage gap to close first, because a plan multiplies everything else.

What good looks like

A one-page plan naming three priorities in order, board and staff aligned on what to invest in (and what to skip), and rough costs attached so it can be funded in phases.

Wondering where AI fits? It runs through all six — a better website, sharper communications, cleaner data — rather than sitting beside them as a seventh. When the Audit spots an AI gap, it points you to our AI Governance Kit: AI you can trust, with guardrails, not AI for its own sake.
